What is electoral registration?
Registering on the electoral register gives you the right to vote in Local, National and European Elections, giving you a say over how you think things should be run. You are not automatically registered, even if your local authority has your details for other purposes (e.g. council tax).
Who can register?
You can register to vote if you are a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Citizen, and are aged 16 or over, as long as you are 18 before 30th November 2007.
Why sign up?
If you're not on the electoral register when an election is called, you will not be able to vote.
You may think voting changes nothing, but in fact it is one of the most important means of making a difference. Remember, a government only has power because people vote for it. If you don't vote, you're giving control over your world to those who do.
Some elections are won by little more than a dozen votes - that means you and your friends voting could change the result of an entire election!
In addition, signing up to the electoral register makes it easier for you to do things like open a bank account and get credit and other services.
